Joseph Easter joined Owaza in 2023, stepping onto the mat in the adult Ju Jitsu class. Coming up on three years of training, he currently holds the rank of brown belt and serves as an assistant instructor for both the adult and kids Ju Jitsu classes, helping out across other classes and the Saturday open mat. He is also the primary instructor for Owaza's Yoga & Internal Arts (Tai Chi) program.
His introduction to martial arts came in childhood, training Taekwondo alongside his father and brother. He returned to the mat as an adult through Krav Maga, where much of the training was spent grappling on the ground — a taste for the ground game that would eventually draw him to Owaza and its Japanese combat Ju Jitsu. He makes no claim to a lifetime on the mat; what he brings is steady, present dedication, on the floor Monday through Thursday and most Saturdays.
Off the mat, Joe carries the title of Gijutsu-in, recognizing his role in bringing Owaza into the modern age. He designed and maintains the dojo's entire digital platform — the website, admin, and member systems — volunteering his skills so that a traditional dojo can thrive in a modern world.
