Hanshi Jim Rivera

Hanshi James Rivera was born on October 21, 1955, in the Fort Apache section of the Bronx, NY. Growing up in one of the toughest neighborhoods in New York, he learned early that martial arts was not just about fighting—it was about survival, discipline, and character.

His father, a Decorated Korean War Veteran who trained in Hapkido while stationed in Korea, began instructing him in boxing and martial arts fundamentals in 1962. This early training at age 7 sparked a lifelong dedication to the martial arts.

He has owned and operated Owaza Ryu Martial Arts since 1979—first on Long Island and then in Florida since 1994. Based in Spring Hill, Florida, Owaza is celebrating over 45 years in operation.

Martial Arts Journey

As a youth, Hanshi Rivera trained at the local Boys' Club taking formal boxing lessons. He then trained under Tony Archibald in Shotokan Karate at Vic Tanny's gym—training wherever they could: rooftops, hallways, and streets.

After moving to Long Island in 1966, he continued his training at the Brentwood Recreational Center in boxing and kickboxing under Gen. John Mills. He began his Ju Jitsu training with O'Sensei Richard Lazarus in the Dai Nan Wan Ryu system in Bay Shore, NY. O'Sensei was a NYPD Detective who had received his training in the Miyama Ryu system under Henry Cho Master Kahn in the Bronx. His training regimen was six days a week, minimally four hours a day—training occupied the majority of his life.

Real-World Experience

Hanshi Rivera worked as a bouncer in 19 nightclubs across New York, providing personal protective services for private details, dignitary protection, weddings, and event security. This real-world experience has shaped his teaching approach—focusing on practical, combat-tested techniques that work when it matters most.

"The most important ingredient to impart to my students is integrity, discipline, and respect. Martial artists should always strive to be role models and mentors. We are highly skilled and trained warriors, but without these three values we can easily become thugs or bullies."

"Martial arts are much more than self-defense—it is a way of life."

"Don't be a victim." — A lesson Hanshi Rivera teaches to all his students.
